Comprehensive Pediatric Dental Emergencies

Your child will receive skilled and compassionate care at Dental Studio 4 Kids. We offer a wide range of dental services to restore your child's dental health.

  • Loose Tooth

Your child can get in an accident or bite on something hard, causing a loose tooth. If your child has a loose baby tooth, keep in mind that the tooth is supposed to come out eventually. They'll start to lose their baby teeth around the age of five or six.

However, sometimes one of your child's adult teeth can become loose. One of their baby teeth might become loose before it's time for it to come out.

Our dentist will evaluate your child's loose tooth. They'll perform x-rays as necessary to determine the best course of action.

  • Knocked Out Tooth

One or more of your child's teeth can get knocked out for various reasons. They can include:

    • Getting hit in the face with a ball
    • Tripping or falling
    • Running into something

While knocked-out teeth are common, they can be a scary situation. It's important to know what steps to take if this happens to your child. Follow the following steps if your child loses a tooth:

    • Control the bleeding
    • Locate the tooth
    • Pick it up with a tissue or cloth (don't touch the root)
    • Place it in a plastic bag with milk

You don't have to worry about saving the tooth if it's a baby one. If it's an adult tooth, you'll need to locate it and bring it to the dentist. Your dentist will try to save the tooth, implanting it back into your child's mouth.

  • Fractured, Chipped, or Cracked Teeth

Teeth can crack or chip at any time due to poor oral health. Fractured teeth that are dental emergencies are typically caused by a type of trauma. This can include getting hit in the face or falling.

Get your child to a pediatric dental office if they chip one of their teeth. The dentist will determine the right dental treatment to ensure optimal oral health.

  • Broken Jaw

You must seek urgent dental care if you believe your child's jaw is broken. Some signs that it might be broken include:

    • Swelling and bruising on their gums, lips, or chin
    • Misshapen or crooked jaw
    • Loose or missing teeth
    • Numbness or tingling on lower lip or chin

The treatment your child receives is based on their condition. They'll require urgent dental care if they're experiencing any of the above symptoms.

  • Toothache

Toothaches can be caused by various things. This includes:

    • Trauma
    • Decay
    • Abscess

A toothache might signify there's an ongoing oral health issue that you're not aware of. Get your child prompt emergency care to address the issue.

Should I Take My Child to the Emergency Room?

If your child is suffering from an urgent issue or a serious injury, it's perfectly acceptable to take them to the emergency room. They can prescribe medications like painkillers or antibiotics that can provide them with relief. They can also assist with controlling your child's bleeding if you're dealing with that.

However, ER doctors and nurses aren't experienced in pediatric dentistry. They don't know the proper dental care procedures to recommend to ensure your child's oral health. That's why we recommend contacting us as soon as possible.

AVOIDING INJURY

Here are a few suggestions to help your child avoid injury:
  • Don’t let your child chew on ice, popcorn kernels or other hard objects.
  • Childproof your house to prevent falls.
  • Always place children in a car seat or put their seat belt on.
  • Make sure they are helmeted for contact sports.
  • Have us create a custom mouthguard for any sports activities.

Below are the most common dental emergencies we’ve encountered along with our recommendations on what to do next:

Chipped teeth: Try to locate the chipped fragment and bring it with the child to our office. Use a cold compress to reduce pain.

Dislodged teeth: If a tooth was moved or loosened but not knocked out, don’t try to move it back into place. Bring the child to Dr. Denisse as quickly as you can.

Knocked out teeth: If you can bring your child and the tooth to our office within 30 minutes of the injury, there is a chance we can reposition the tooth in its socket. Only touch the tooth by the enamel, not the root. Gently rinse it (if it’s dirty) and store it in cold milk or saliva. Do not wash off the tooth with soap. See Dr. Denisse as soon as possible or head for the nearest emergency room.

Toothache: Rinse the child’s mouth and inspect it to make sure nothing is caught between the teeth. Use a cold compress to relieve pain. A children’s pain reliever may be taken orally. Of course, contact our office as soon as you can.
